“Yes, RAW files are always a bit dull-looking. That’s expected.” 🥱
That’s true. Whether it should be true is a separate discussion…
There are certain important adjustments that are important to apply to nearly all RAW files, and they are not in most photographers’ processing repertoire. Well, now they are, thanks to medium rare!
“Why is this necessary? I agree raw colors are dull, but I can correct them myself.”
That’s great that you feel you can make your raw files work for you! Unfortunately, we’ve searched far and wide, tried several available “fixes”, and interviewed several high-level photographers who feel they have overcome the dull files — but none of them were fully correcting the issues. medium rare does, and it’s backed by advanced color science. 💡
“Didn’t someone publish a study that showed Sony colors are actually the best? What’s up with that? Why did you start with Sony then?”
Yep, that’s our friends, Tony and Chelsea Northrup! We love their YouTube channel, and this was a fantastic, well-done study.
However, their study used JPEG photos from the cameras — not RAWs. This shows us that Sony does, in fact, produce beautiful colors and contrasts — we just need to “unlock” them from the RAW files. That’s what medium rare does!
“Jeff, you’re primarily a landscape photographer. Will this help me as a ______ shooter?”
Yes, it will! Our profile is universal. Unlike most presets, which are designed to emulate a specific style — Medium Rare is designed to correct specific issues that occur in all kinds of files, and bring you to an optimal starting point. It works for all types of photos, in all kinds of light, with all kinds of camera settings. You’ll be amazed! 🤯
Why a profile, and not just a preset?
Good question! Two main reasons:
We want to hammer in that this is a starting point. The adjustments we make shouldn’t feel like you’ve pushed the sliders. Start from ours, showing all zeroes, and take things wherever you’d like.
Because medium rare consists of profiles, you can still create and apply presets on top of it!
Will this work on Canon files?
We’re working on Canon next. Join our mailing list (which we hardly ever use, ‘cuz we hate spam too) to be the first to know when we release others.

Escaype isn’t a large money-hungry corporation. It’s just the two of us, Jeff and Tung. 👨🤝👨🏼 To be honest, we considered keeping these valuable secrets to ourselves. We decided to share them to help you succeed. We believe medium rare is VERY underpriced: the improvement is night-and-day, we would never have discovered the necessary adjustments without in-depth investigation, and we can’t imagine editing without it.
Please respect our hard work and your purchase by not distributing our profiles to others. In the photo community, word of an artist’s reputation for cheating or unreliability can spread quickly.

“Do you have a free trial?”
As close as we can! First, check out our sample before/after photos on the main page.
If you have a few specific photos that you’d like to try our profiles on, contact us with a Google Drive or Dropbox link to the RAW files, and we’ll show you what we’ve got. 🙌 Don’t be shy! We won’t use your photos for anything, we just want to help you. Go ahead and send us your “problem files”, the tricky ones that you were never able to nail — we’re not afraid of them. It’s where the profiles really shine.
What’s your return policy?
Due to the nature of our product, once we process your order, it’s just not fair to accept general “returns”. However, if you’re not over-the-moon for any reason, let us know, we’ll probably be able to help you fix it, or we will refund on a case-by-case basis. We’re pretty reasonable humans, and we want you to be happy.
